Just a little rant after the jump.

Kinja'd!!!

This had been gnawing at me for a little while. Slowly but surely, but especially as of recently, Oppo has begun to feel very serious, or at the very least much more serious than ever before. Not sure if its the change from informal rules to written rules, maybe the exposure to the front page has changed the expectations of us, maybe its something else. I dont know. I just feel like sometime people forget what this is, its an off-topic forum, filled with a bunch of random people, who for the most part like, like cars. We also have other interests we like too, be it music or airplanes, or whatever. We arent the police, we arent representative of the world and its feelings, and we arent here to change anything. We are a group of group of people who like to speculate on things many times we've never done, and may never do, but even then we are pretty damn smart about the topic anyways. Oppositelock is a rain drop in the ocean, if we're lucky we're triple digits in frequent posters if I had to give it a guess. I guess what I'm trying to say is, in the words of that ugly football team's quarterback with the G as their logo, is R-E-L-A-X. Whatever is happening isnt the end of the world. Take a deep breath and move on. It'll be fine, trust me.

No.

You know how you can get more people to be active?

Stop making women feel not welcome. And stop telling the few who are here to relax.

That was the exact point of my post.

I've never posted NSFW posts, hell I dont even look at them, like ever, I am completely disinterested in them. Not once did I say women, or make a political statement about such. What I am saying is assumption like that you just had once were not made, and they now are. And clearly I am not making a point that I preferred the time such assumptions were not made.

Us? When did this become us vs them?

This topic, like I said up top, has been on my mind for a while. This at the people complaining about NSFW posts, to the people who threaten to leave over the lack of them, to the people who throw unnecessary temper tantrums about whatever the site layout happens to be.

This kind of shit dividing people into factions, and its going to hurt Oppo in the long run. Not make it better.

Even the people who go apeshit every time there's a post about like the SR71 story, or any other reoccurring thing. It's getting ridiculous frankly.

Sometime I look back at disco dancing and wooly mammoth hunts, ah...simpler times. What I actually mean is that I've been around for a while, not as long as some, but much longer than most and oppo has, well its changed a lot in that time. Lots of new people and new ideas, HUGE surges in commenters, and lots more activity and much more structure; Some of it overdue, some of it was forced on us by situations that didn't exist previously. The truth is that Oppo is a bigger, more serious place than it has been, and its something of a natural...maturation. I still think this is the coolest place in town, but I've grown a lot with it and it would be a bit shocking if you had just jumped in to the middle, since its a little immature and mature all at once. Its not going back, thats for sure, but seeing the long term trends...and not just the flash in the pan moments...give me hope.

Toplessness and booties qualify as "Rated R" level of NSFW per the rules though. Rules need to be more explicit if they wish to remove those forms of nudity.

I understand that, its for sure not the place it was 6 years ago. But it seems like many people are always looking to pick a fight. Whether its the person that deliberately posts to stir a specific group of people, or the person that goes way over the top in their moral crusade, those are the people this post is targeted at.

...or the people that tell everyone to calm down, or the people that make big goodbyes, or the people who like to rant about the people that....you see where I'm going with this. Oppo is what we make it, we reap the drama that is sown. like I said, hot spots pop up, stay lit for a little while and die down and life continues as normal. I realize there is nothing I can do to stop people from being people, (we tried that once....we could never get the voltage right) anyway people are going to drama, the best way to deal is just to let them drama by their lonesome. Please alert the mods to shirtstorms so we can manage the damage, but otherwise my advice is to let people boil over, or apologize, or storm off, or cry for attention or...whatever they need to do in their own little world and let it burn itself out...it always does.

Don't know if this is sexist or what but car culture is historically a male dominated area of life so women wanting to join the 'club' should know exactly what to expect. I love cars and women, shit I even married one(not a car). NSFW should be enough to keep offence in check, unless someone's having a bad day and needs a punching bag.

To me the grandstanding posts about how "I need to leave oppo, I'll be back when it's better" etc. are far more dramatic than any argument. You are 1) drawing attention to the minor squabble, 2) making it all about you, and 3) elevating yourself ABOVE everyone else by passing collective judgment.

I have been in several minor arguments/discussions recently, and I'd say outside of the thread it has had absolutely no lasting impact on my camaraderie with the other posters I contested with (though I may be oblivious?). That's what adults do. They talk, the feel, and if they can't reach a change or compromise, they disagree and move on.

If I read this right it's not just about the NSFW posts. People have been jumping down each others throats for making personal posts, asking too many questions in posts, and just general drama. The latest shitstorm is just what prompted him to post a rant about it.

Do you even remember the K-Roll incident? Denver getting shat on all over the place for posting too much about his truck? People have been fighting between "keep oppo cars" and "keep oppo off-topic" for ages. NSFW is just a part of that, but not the whole thing.

Yeah your right, it's always going to be a battle to get it right but the NSFW should be a good hint to not click, I will skip NSFW posts mostly as I come here for the cars and there's no shortage of flesh on the rest of the virtual planet. Just saying there shouldn't be a problem if it's labelled correctly unless the people getting offended are looking for some anger fuel.

Sure it heals, but its like a scar. There is protection to the previously exposed area, but its not the same as it once was. This isnt based on any particular flare up, or any specific topic. If in Oppo we reap the drama that we sow telling a very small forum not to take itself too seriously is pretty damn low on the list. And your right, the best thing is to let them wallow by themselves, but too many here dont, and then just feed the fire on some misguided principle of freedom or otherwise. Thats my point here.

Yes because getting called a sexist for posting a few boobs is perfectly logical. I posted it because oppo is turning into a shit hole. Its an off topic blog to post in. If you dont want NSFW change the rules. There are a few people who who me and others feel are the downfall of oppo and we see it happening all the time. Yes because getting called a sexist for posting a few boobs is perfectly logical.

Actually, astoundingly, it is logical given that this is a forum with a focus on automotive culture, not softcore pron.

I posted it because oppo is turning into a shit hole.

So, what you're telling me, and all of the other mods, is that you posted a worthless NSFW post out of spite because you don't like this place that you - for some reason - continue to come to despite the fact that you don't like it?

Interesting. That's been noted.

Also, that's called being a dick, something that is, in fact, against the rules.

Its an off topic blog to post in

Let's clear up a general misinterpretation here.

Oppositelock was born out the need to take automotive-related discussion out of FP posts that were not related to the FP post itself. For instance, a post about automotive sales or legislation is not the best place for discussing how to install a new alternator in a Volkswagen.

Oppositelock was made to be an off-topic forum for automotive-related posts and commentary that otherwise had no place in any of the FP posts. It was NOT made to be an off-topic softcore forum.

If you dont want NSFW change the rules.

Here are the rules, chief:

http://oppositelock.jalopnik.com/the-revised-ha…

http://oppositelock.jalopnik.com/on-nsfw-posts-…

There are a few people who who me and others feel are the downfall of oppo and we see it happening all the time.

You're right. There are a few people who feel like you do. On the other hand, there are many more that don't feel like you do. We try to value everyone here, and we do whatever we can to make everyone feel welcome. However, at the end of the day, this is a community. A community does not revolve around one person or even a small group of people. It revolves around the majority. At present, you are not in said majority. If it's that big of a problem for you, I'd be happy to provide you links to the likes of Autoblog, TTAC, or the Motor Trend forums.

The Feminazis come in and try and make everyone conform to them

Way to go trying to come up with an attempt to rationally contribute positively to a conflict. Because, really, nothing exudes class, maturity, and community spirit like name calling.

If truly you are so distraught, then I'm sorry that you don't seem to be satisfied here, and I wish you the best of luck in finding a new forum that better conforms to your personal standards.

It's called growing up. If approached with the right attitude, a scar is a thing of beauty. It represents an acknowledgement of fallibility, and a resolution to constantly strive to learn from mistakes and be better.

As for taking things too seriously, the first sign of that is posts like this. Think about it for a moment: if you thinks things are so serious that you felt compelled to make a post encourgaing people not to take things so seriously, then who is the one that is actually taking things too seriously?

If it ever gets to that point, just shift your focus away to something else. This is Oppositelock, and even more so, this is the interwebz. There is nothing here worth taking so seriously that you feel compelled to make a post like this.

NSFW must be announced in the title of your post and be hidden behind a safe lead image. If NSFW content is the first piece of media (picture or video) regardless of where it is in the post, Kinja will display it on the Oppo frontpage. (If you have doubts whether it's NSFW, it is. This includes nudity, real or implied, gore or anything else that might get someone in trouble if their boss caught them reading it at work, assuming that you are allowed to browse the internet at work. Additionally, let's keep this stuff to "R" rated material, we're not a porn site, the internet is full of porn, we don't need more here).

Please tell me how i broke this rule. It was announced and you see more than this in R rated movies.

I never said i posted NSFW because i hate this place. I posted my going away post that was taken down. I have been doing NSFW post every so often and never once have they been attacked. Except suddenly yesterday which had way less women than i normally put. Im sorry but i dont get how me being attacked and called a sexist for posting something that is not sexist is right.

If simply telling people to relax is taking things to seriously maybe I am. But I did it in a level headed way. Down played the topic, posted after the jump, and don't feel as if I did anything of any major consequence. Its the people that are attempting to inject things into Oppo that just aren't necessary. Whether it be a hyper complicated and controversial political issue, or something as simple as the people who draw attention to themselves like a stubborn toddler because they are shocked they have reprimanded for doing something wrong. That's who this post is aimed at.
